My Grandmother's Hands
My grandmother, Hatice, is 78 years old now. When she was a little girl in a village near Uşak, she couldn't go to school because the nearest school was too far away. However, she was very talented with her hands. She could weave a small carpet on her own when she was only twelve, and by the age of fifteen, she was able to make carpets with difficult patterns. Unlike most girls in her village, she could also ride a horse and swim in the river. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to read or write for many years. Then, when she was forty-five, she joined a literacy course at the Public Education Centre, and after six months, she managed to read her first book. "It was the happiest day of my life," she says. Today, her eyes are not as good as before, so she can't weave carpets any more. But she can still teach the old patterns to her granddaughters, and she is able to read the newspaper every morning.
